Jazz Up Your Junk

Decorative Painting for Accessories & Furniture
Have you redecorated only to find your accents, from lamps to photo matting, no longer match? Susan reveals how TV’s designers refinish over ceramic, glass, wood and even plastic! Learn to copy the finishes seen in high end stores. LEARN the newest decorative paint techniques, metallic overlays, gold leafing on glass, foiling, varnish crackling, etched glass and more for an Old World or contemporary finish. Discover how to re-colour expensive photo matting. Most projects completed in ½ hour or less.

Projects you’ll learn:
Create “fake” terra cotta tiles with dimensional paste – looks incredible!

Convert those old fake “brassy” lamps and tables into new looks like brushed nickel

Gold leaf over plastic to make it look truly heirloom. Take your old photo matting and update the colors – with a look that is custom quality.

Garage sale addicts – you’ll purchase items at rock bottom prices because everyone else hates the colour! (Warning, some of my students have gone nuts as they’ve lamented the items they’ve sold!)

Skill Level: It’s only paint! No previous finishing or painting skills required

Supply fee $14.00 for textbook and practice sample. Bring a camera for take home ideas.

Course fee: check with the school board you are registering with or Desert & Decor Events for Decorating Coach Classes.

Before Lamp
I loved my lamp, but as you can see, it was clearly stuck in the 80's. It had actually been an expensive lamp that I'd gotten on sale. Rather than sell it for next to nothing at a garage sale, I refinished it.
After Lamp
Isn't this incredible! “Jazz Up Your Junk” (book or class) shows you first how I was able to use only water-based paint that would not ever peel or chip of the ceramic. Used in this project: black base, overlay of gold and pewter veining. Looks like it came right from a high-end manufacturer. Cost to finish, about $5.00
Before Matting
The dusty rose matting would never fit new color scheme. (It had actually been grey previously so this was the second makeover!)
After Matting
Matting costs a fortune so I re-colored it! Looks great in my olive green tones, and no one can tell.
More Matting
There's no end the variations you can make in your matting colors. Here's a good idea, when you se matting on a clearance sale price simply because it's an old color, take advantage of the price and recolor at home
Crackling
One of the many finishes you'll learn in class or from our book

How the Class Works
Lecture and demonstration gives an overview of how to do the finishes. A practice sample is provided so you'll get the "feel" of the technique. For your benefit, we don't finish whole items in class. After a few strokes you'll get it, the rest of the time would be redundant. Instead we use every minute of the class to be learning one new awesome finish after another.

What Students Like Best
That absolutely every finish is inexpensive, beginner easy, and very quick. Clean up is easy as we work with water based products. And the looks . . . sensational! Friends will never guess how easy it is.

Most commonly asked questions:
Q. "I'm not good at crafts and I'm definitely not artistic, how will I do?
A. The finishes are so easy to do; I'm almost embarrassed to teach. You'll have beautiful work the first time through.

Q. There are some things I'd like to refinish but I'm not sure if I can?
A. If it doesn't work, you can paint it! There's nothing (at least almost nothing) that you can't refinish.

Susan's Favourites:
The translucent metallic glazes (as seen in my before and after lamp). What I love about all the finishes is that you can start with the most inexpensive items, gaudy hot, pink plastic, (plastic of any kind for that matter), and when finished, it will look like fine, artisan pieces. All I look for now in a piece is interesting shape and definition, the cheapness of the material in the piece is totally irrelevant!
